Dear '64 Mustangs,
Regret that I won't be able to join you for our 50th reunion. One of my daughters is running in the Marine Corps Marathon here in DC on Oct. 25and I promised I would be there to cheer her on. However, I do want to pass along one encouraging thought as we cross this milestone together. To mark the occasion, and as a former MPHS swimmer, I decided to take part in the annual 'Washington's Crossing' swim across the Potomac River -- about a mile and a half distance. Good news: I finished first in my age group. But, truth be told, there were only 3 in my age group. So there is an advantage to getting older -- the competition is thinning out.
Happy 50th reunion, fellow Mustangs. Let's shoot for a century.
Best to all,
Rick

Dean and I met the second day of school our freshman year in college (Agnes Scott for me, GA Tech for him) and have been married for 46 years. We have a daughter and son and three grandchildren who keep us going and keep us smiling.
For 23 years, we lived in the Midwest, first in Indiana (Purdue for Dean, teaching elementary school and childbearing for me), then in Birmingham, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, during a tour of duty in the auto industry (Dean); grad school for me (MBA at the University of Michigan at the ripe old age of 35); and the beginning of my career in marketing. I was the first woman hired in management at the Stroh Brewery, where I learned about consumer products marketing, refined my taste for beer and bar hopping was “calling on accounts”; then to Vlasic, a subsidiary of Campbell Soup Co, where one perfect new products assignment let me eat my way through Texas and California.
In 1991, we moved to Atlanta, and work has included a short hop in marketing at Arby’s (the inmates ran the asylum but a short stay yielded lots of good stories); establishing the database and interactive marketing agency-within-an-agency at a large firm; then a move to Agnes Scott College, my alma mater, where I served as alumnae relations director and later managed the admissions marketing programs. In 2011, I tried to retire but failed, and now am working as the executive director of the Women’s College Coalition, a one-woman office (me) representing the 45 women’s colleges in the US and Canada. I expect to try retirement again in January 2015, and like many of you, travel is high on our list (we’re just back from two weeks in Turkey – lots to tell!)

After a short stint living in Denver, Colorado, returned to NC and have been back in Charlotte since 1973. Elise McClung Barksdale and I have walked 3 times a week for going on 35 years so she reminds me of all the MPHS stories I have long forgotten. My husband, Bill, and I have a wonderful blended family of 2 sons (mine) and 2 daughters (his), along with 6 grandchildren. Mostly retired after long nonprofit and fundraising consulting years.

I have had an unremarkable life. I am old, fat, bald, have sagging jowls, creaky knees, and have gone half crazy. When not standing on my front porch ranting and making obscene gestures at my neighbors, I celebrate my geezerhood by hanging with other old geezers. We moan, complain and discuss our bowel movements. Go geezers! Miss and love my old classmates. Lots of luck to everyone! I think we will need it.

I really am sorry that I cannot attend the reunion. Just to update a bit, after graduation from Myers Park I went to NC State. Well as lack of study would have it I did not do as well as I should have. During the time I was there my parents moved to Atlanta. So, I followed them. After sort of floundering around for a year or so I decided to go ahead and go into the military. I was in the Air Force. I was trained as a Vietnamese linguist and more specifically as a voice intercept operator. Which is a fancy way of saying that I was flying low altitiude recon missions over Laos. Was stationed in Vietnam at Danang AFB for 2 years. After getting out of the military I went back to college at the University of Georgia where I finally graduated in 1974 with a degree in Business Systems. I currently work for IBM as a computer specialist. Even though I am 69 years old I don't plan on retiring any time soon unless my health issues from Agent Orange get worse. I was really looking forward to seeing everyone and having y'all meet my wife of 40 years but it was just not in the cards. Please send me an email or look me up on Facebook. I would really enjoy hearing from you. I hope the reunion is great - I know it will be because of the good people that have worked so hard on it. Hope to see some of you soon. Thanks for letting me take up some space in the bios section.

Time passes so fast! I lived in the Charlotte area for many years after graduation. (First in south Charlotte, then Huntersville and Lake Norman). During those years, I was married to Frank Hayes, a wonderful man. Frank was killed in 1998 in a terrible accident and my life changed dramatically. Some years later, I decided to move to Myrtle Beach and live the laid back life which I enjoy to this day. I married Edward Conlan in 2007. Together we enjoy travel, riding our Harley Davidson and activities with friends. As for my profession, I worked with The Hartford Insurance Group, retiring from them in 2000. In summation, I life is good!

Went to NC State to study Chemical Engineering, but discovered that engineering was not my calling, so upon graduation I went to work at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington while attending law school at night at Georgetown University Law Center. Returned to Charlotte in 1972 and practiced Intellectual Property law (patent and trademark law) until I retired in 2010. Nola and I just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We have one son, his wife, and two lovely granddaughters 7 and 10 living nearby in Charlotte. I've enjoyed reconnecting with classmates while working on this reunion and look forward to visiting with all of you at the big event in October.

After graduating from Myers Park I attended Gardner Webb College for two years and then transferred to the University of Georgia where I received a B.S. Degree in Entomology. After graduating from UGA, I spent four years in the US Air Force as an entomologist, working in insect and vector control and public health issues. During this time I married my wife, Pamela Williams, whom I met at Gardner Webb. This year we have been married for 45 years. We have two sons (one is married and one who is not) and two granddaughters, who all live close to us in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I still work in sales with BASF Corporation, whom I have been associated with for the past 29 years. The only individual from our 1964 class that I have had any contact with over these many years has been Meredith Ford Forshaw. Her husband Tom Forshaw III, owns Forshaw, Inc. in Charlotte. They have been a customer of mine for all of these years. And . . most recently through this reunion process, I have reunited with Steve St.Clair.

Oh man, I am furious that I will not be able to attend our 50th reunion. I was waiting to respond in hopes that my X-rays today would show that I was free to walk on my foot....no such luck. I fell and broke my foot several weeks ago and the doctor said today that it will never get well if I don't stay off of it. I am sad I can't be there.
It is easy to see that y'all have worked very hard in putting this entire reunion together. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I know it will be loads of fun and everyone will have a blast together.....we sure did 50 years ago.
Here's my bio information:
After graduation, I attened Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga. I married Vance Cockerham (class of '60) and we had 2 children, Brian & Catherine. I have now been married to Ron Sparrow for 28 years. After he retired we moved here to Chapel Hill to be close to my children and grandchildren who all live in Cary which is 20 mins. away. We enjoy going to all the UNC games. I enjoy reading, gardening, cooking, playing bridge, traveling, and playing with my 5 grandchildren, all boys, ages 12-3....so fun and exhausting!! I am now trying to grow old gracefully and enjoy every day. I hate I am going to miss the 50th reunion. I had looked so forward to seeing everyone again. HAVE FUN!!

Married 45 years, Jeff & I have two daughters and three grandchildren. Needless to say, we are crazy about their families. After 13 years of training, Jeff established the first rheumatology practice in Lynchburg in 1979 and I continued teaching until retiring in 1995. We both love flyfishing, being at the lake or at the beach (Wild Dunes).
Lots of volunteer work, a caring church, good friends, good books, 3 dogs, and what used to be a lovely yard until the deer ate everything-- all in all a good life. My latest is doing section hiking on the Appalachian Trail with 3 friends from my weekly AT hiking club. We completed 229 miles in PA this summer. (Saxby, you were my inspiration)
Hope the name tags are in BIG PRINT and that we can still recognize one another!
We always welcome anyone wanting to visit Lynchburg. It is rather like Charlotte used to be before exploding in size except we have hills and the Blue Ridge is ever-present.

Hey all you MPHS Mustangs: It's been awhile and love catching up with some on FB.
I will try and be brief, that's a lot of years to try and be brief. My biggest regret was not taking education seriously. Back in the day especially in my home putting food on the table was a priority. My father had the disease of alcoholism, and I had five siblings to help feed and purchase school clothes. So off to the work force I went. BTW, we lived at the first house on Brandywine Ave. If those walls could talk.
1964 graduated, married and found a job. Married a guy, Jay Stone from East Meck. our marriage lasted 15 years. We have two wonderful sons, Jay Jr. 46, and Billy 42. Both boys and my four grandchildren live around Atlanta, Georgia. I have one granddaughter who will be a junior in high school. Two grandsons in college Mississippi State and Belmont University in Tenn. My baby grandson who is one, was a surprise to all of us, and a blessing as all my grandchildren are.
Backing up while working in Charlotte at H & B Tool and Die over the phone on a sales call I met my future husband, Roy Young from Laurinburg. For me it was love at first sight, which of course was a blind date. Moved to Laurinburg in 1985 went to work at Scotland Memorial Hospital as a medical coder.
Married Roy in 1986 and became a step-mom to four teenagers. They have become adults now and the flock has grown. Lets see if I can get all of it right. We have 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and this number keeps growing, 6 great grandchildren. Talk about a full house during the holidays. In fact, we had to move our dinners to the church fellowship hall. So, I'm still feeding a lot of mouths. lol
Both Roy and I retired (well sort of) in 2010. I had a position at the hospital as a certified professional coder for over 20 years. I got so bored after one month yes, one month I went back PRN about 2 days a week. Roy has a lawn care business to keep him busy.
We love traveling and about to take our 19th cruise. Hey, who can complain about being treated like a princess. Hope all of you stay safe and well, and see you in October.

Brian and I have been happily married since 1967. We have three grown children and seven grandchildren, which are our heartstrings. After graduating from Queens College, I worked as their Registrar until our first child was born. I then spent a number of years very active in the volunteer sector until returning to work as the Youth Director at First Presbyterian Church, where I have been a member since birth. I now work at another non-profit, the Community Culinary School of Charlotte and started a catering service for the program, Encore Catering, whose mission is to give jobs to our students and graduates as well as generate funds to help support the school. I love what I do and likely you will see some of our staff at our Reunion Luncheon on October 25. I have loved catching up with classmates while working on the reunion and hope to see most of you in October.

My wife, Mildred, and I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We’ve been married (second marriage for both of us) for thirty years and have a son and daughter (my stepchildren) and four grandchildren—two at the College of William & Mary and two in high school.
The day I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1968, I was commissioned as a naval officer. I served aboard the U.S.S San Marcos (LSD-25), and then served a year with the Naval Advisory Group in Vietnam, where I led a group providing operational and logistical support to the Navy’s patrol boat riverine operations. I left the Navy as a Lieutenant after returning from Vietnam in 1971.
I was the director of Program Integrity at the North Carolina Medical Peer Review Foundation in Raleigh, where I established the North Carolina’s first Medicaid fraud and abuse investigation unit. I left the Foundation in 1979 and joined Burroughs Wellcome, a British pharmaceutical company, at Research Triangle Park, NC. There I survived two megamergers that eventually formed GlaxoSmithKline. I retired from GSK in 2007—after 28 years in pharmaceutical R&D—as the global vice president of R&D quality and regulatory compliance. During that time, Mildred, who also worked for GSK, and I had an expatriate assignment in England, living and working there for several years.
Somewhere in the back of my consciousness, Miss Baker must have been calling, because, since retiring, I’ve been living the second-act writing life on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and have published two books. Libido’s Twist, a medical suspense novel set in southwest England, was published in 2010 and won a Writer’s Digest award in genre fiction. My second book, The Drone Enigma is a military thriller and was published in December 2013. I’m currently working the third. ( http://ron-mcmanus.com )

After graduation from MPHS I attended and graduated from UNC-G in elementary education. I met my husband Gene in 1968 and we were married in 1969. After teaching second grade for two years, I stayed at home with our daughters, Sandy and Kim. Later, a great friend and neighbor and I started a business, "The Country Stitchery", ran it for five years and then sold. For 17 years I was the secretary for the guidance office at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. Our daughters both graduated from there. Sandy graduated from UNC-W and Kim from UNC-CH. My husband and I both retired in our mid 50s. Gene, an NCSU civil engineer graduate, retired from his position as the Director of the Natural Gas Div. for the State of NC. He is a golfer and works at Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NCSU. I play a lot of bridge, love scrapbooking, reading and needlework. We have four wonderful grandchildren, 3 boys and 1 firs, that keep us very busy. We enjoy traveling and attending NSU football games, also love the beach trips with family and friends.

After I graduated from Duke, I worked in Boston as a secretary for a year. With that experience, I managed to obtain employment in Switzerland, where I spent two great years. Upon my return to the US, I moved to Orlando, Florida. I said I would never teach, BUT… I nevertheless went to Rollins College for an MAT. I started teaching in Brevard County, FL in 1972 and taught French and Spanish for 30 years. I actually liked it! Meanwhile I met my first husband, a fellow teacher. We were married around 11 years and had two daughters. Ginger was brilliant and lovely. She finished at Hollins College in 2 ½ yrs. (20 yrs. old) and was accepted at Columbia U. grad school when her heart stopped and she died. I miss her. Heidi (34) is now working on what will be hopefully (and finally) a PhD. in biological anthropology at the U. of Arkansas. She is a joy to me, if a bit slow in finishing her schooling. She spends her summers in Amarna, Egypt supervising a team of anthropologists who are studying ancient bones. In 1990 I married Joel. He was at the Kennedy Space Center putting together the Galileo spacecraft for JPL. He then got a job with Boeing doing shuttle payload hoisting and handling. We are still on our honeymoon. :-) He was an amateur sportscar racer for 30 years. We are loving retirement. Joel volunteers at a military plane museum. He also judges science fairs and other student events. We both work out at the Y. I swim in our pool, walk on the beach, drive a Meals on Wheels route, and belong to 3 book clubs. We both enjoy travelling. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone.

I am sorry that I can't attend the reunion. It should be a lot of fun. A little about me: I am married to Ken Kerrick, a retired biology professor. We have two sons. Karsten is married with two children. He manages a hospital cafeteria. Ted is engaged and pursuing an opera career in Washington, DC. After many jobs, I finally ended up working as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. My goal at Myers Park was to be in psychology.
